Rick Simpson oil, or RSO for short, is a cannabis extract that is high in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and other cannabinoids. It is named after its creator, Rick Simpson, who first began experimenting with cannabis oil after he was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2003. RSO is made by using a solvent, such as ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, to extract the cannabinoids from the cannabis plant material. The resulting oil is typically dark in color and has a thick, viscous consistency.
